It's Friday! Which means the least productive work day of the week! Let's spend some time at the beginning of class bonding over current events, expand our knowledge of domestic and global affairs, and overall become more informed and sophisticated humans.

WEEK 3 Daily Objectives
Starter: Deep Reading Survey
Please take the survey linked above to give us feedback on this assignment!
Ashley's Rationale about the next assignment!
This is actually a really key piece- it requires you to engage and interact with your sources at a deeper level, and it's something that former seniors have found hugely helpful once they enter into the writing process. If you do this well, you should have some pieces of analysis and evidence that you can pop right into your thesis when you are drafting. This is also a task that is key to academic research, and is likely something you are going to have to do at some point in college- I've talked to a number of alumni who have had to do this in college. As far as the number of sources, the more research you do, the more you know. Remember-- the goal of a writing assignment is the RESEARCH, not the actual writing. The downfall of much non-fiction writing is not having done enough research.
Daily Goal for Today: Find (and print!) at least two additional sources. Remember, these must be reputable and ideally of an academic nature or from a research institution/governmental organization, but do NOT have to be from academic journals. If you find these quickly, start reading and annotating them!
Find and print at least two additional sources.
Work Time: Deep Reading and Research
Goal: Finish deep reading packet (Due Tomorrow, start of class)
Starter: Independent work habits discussion
DEEP READING ASSIGNMENT Goal
Finish intertextuality paragraphs, start bibliography (Due start of class Tuesday, 1/28)
STARTER: How are you taking notes and keeping track of sources?
Etymology Time! "RESEARCH"
But first: Scope out the inspirational quote by Hungarian biochemist who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1937! He is credited with first isolating vitamin C and discovering the components and reactions of the citric acid cycle.
1590s, from Middle French recercher, from Old French recercher "seek out, search closely," from re-, intensive prefix (see re-), + cercher "to seek for," from Latin circare "go about, wander, traverse," in Late Latin "to wander hither and thither," from circus "circle"
Deep Reading work time!
Goal: Write 1 intertextuality paragraph (Forget what that is? Look at the Deep Reading guidelines on the senior project page and check out Lyle Bryson's example!)
By tomorrow: Make sure you’ve read/listened to the student-led seminar text! See homework page for this!
While we're at the library, first meet with your action project focus group if you requested that meeting time, then get to work achieving this week's objectives. See the suggested agenda (below) for guidelines on how to facilitate this meeting.
Work Time Goals:

Meeting #1 Date/Time: Wednesday, 1/22 at the Durango Public Library
Announcements and Today's Goals
If you are planning on doing ANY fundraising for your senior project, you MUST follow this protocol!
STARTER: Set your intention for today's work time
FRAMING: The key to productive work time is to clear your head of all the "shoulds, woulds, coulds" that you brought into the work time space with you. Focus on the one or two things that you need to accomplish in THIS time. What is reasonable that you accomplish with regards to your research and senior project?
STARTER TASK: Set two goals for yourself today, ideally based off of the goals I listed in the starter. Try to make them as specific and concrete as possible. Then, estimate how much time each goal/task will take.
1. I will find an academic text on the effects of colonialism on Kenyan's system of education today. (15 minutes)
2. I will read and annotate the abstract and conclusion of that source (25 minutes)
3. Action Project: I will find and research two non-profit organizations that do work in Sub-Saharan Africa and email their program directors about potential partnership for my action project. (1 hour)
