TED Prep Day 2

2/28/2017

Announcements:
  1. TONIGHT'S HOMEWORK is to watch ONE MORE student example (linked on the senior project page) that you didn’t watch today. Look for their hook, and how they engaged their audience!
  2. Library Day tomorrow-- goal is to develop slides and outline what you want to say. By the end of this time, you should aim for being roughly 50% done with initial slides and outline.
  3. Bookmark this TED prep schedule, which includes all daily activities and resources
  4. I will collect your notes from the Sarah Cain and Ken Robinson ted talks in class on Thursday for a 10 point completion grade

Starter: A TED talk you've surely seen (on purpose – we care not about his message). Ken Robinson: Do schools kill creativity?  We'll watch this with our graphic organizer.  Debrief organizer in small groups (2/3 students), share out.

TED Analysis:  In small groups, share out your TED analysis.
  1. What patterns did you see in terms of what people liked, and what was interesting?
  2. What were the verbal and non-verbal talents the presenters showed?  Share, write your top two on the board.
  3. Write the top audience interaction technique on the board
  4. What style differences did you note in your group?  What similarities?
  5. Share your different styles as presenters

Student Examples:  Watch at least half of a student example linked on my senior project page.  Take notes on…
  1. What was their hook?  Was it effective?  Why/why not?
  2. How did this person use positive elements of their own personality to cultivate relationships with the audience and make their talk more interesting?

Short Article: Making presentations in the TED Style.  Read this article, and pick one of the talks described to watch.  Explain why you chose that particular style, then watch it and take notes on…
  1. What stood out to you about this talk
  2. What you want to imitate from this talk
  3. 2-3 specific ideas you got from this talk

  2. Timeline Note:  Next week is the LAST WEEK to work on and revise your senior thesis!  I will be running writing workshops on things every day next week.  Starting now, you should plan on spending SUBSTANTIAL time outside of class (like, this weekend) revising and polishing your work.

Parts 1-3 Peer Critiques

2/10/2017

Class Biz
  1. Go over next week's objectives/benchmarks (See Senior Project page for the document)
  2. SPAM 2 form due in my class inbox by 3:30 pm today!
  3. Schedule SPAM 3 if you haven't already!
  4. A note on the rough draft deadline and an extension request:  I understand some of you feel rushed writing your rough draft.  However, I am keeping the deadline as it is for several reasons. 1.  We simply don't have time to extend it and need to allow enough time for your advisor to give you feedback and for two days of peer critique next Wed. and Thur (the four day weekend is a big factor here)  2. It is a ROUGH draft and you'll have a week of class + two weekends to revise it.  3.  In college, you'll have far far less time for a paper like this and while we are giving you more time for the whole process than you would have for obvious reasons, I don't want to take too much of the pressure off.  4.  I haven't been wildly impressed by everyone's use of class time this week (other weeks have been stellar).

Agenda
Peer Critiques Parts 1-3
  1. Get into groups of three (it doesn't matter if you haven't finished writing Parts 1-3 as you will benefit from GIVING feedback)
  2. Elect a taskmaster-- this person reads the instructions to the group and keeps people on task
  3. Follow the critique protocol. Seriously. Follow it.

Work Time
  1. Revise Parts 1-3 based on the feedback you were given
  2. Work on drafting Part 4
  3. Conference with Ashley as needed

HOMEWORK:
  1. Work on drafting Part 4 of your paper.  Remember, the full rough draft is due at the start of class on WEDNESDAY, 2/15.

Research Question: What energy strategies from U.S. cities and countries around the world would be most effective at reducing greenhouse gas emissions?

Part IV: Conclusion
The results of this research show that there are three essential strategies that must be taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and successfully transition to a clean energy nation. These are collaboration, ambitious goals, and policy. The research also shows that these steps must be taken together, in a coordinated manner, as each helps to ensure the success of the other. The combination of these strategies has proven to be successful in countries around the world including Germany and Denmark. The fact that they have also been successful in some U.S. cities and states, like Greensburg, Kansas and Vermont, proves their universal applicability.

This research has also shown that we need to shift the mindset of citizenry to value long-term successes over short-term profit. Denmark and Germany both experienced events (e.g. Chernobyl) that made clear the dangers and unsustainability of non-renewable energy sources.  Greensburg also experienced a catastrophic event that similarly made undeniable the need for transition to renewables. It is apparent from these three histories that significant change is only made when the current system is clearly no longer viable.

Yet, more than citizen pressure was required to make these transformations possible; governmental will, persistence and skill were also essential. This is illustrated by the experience of the Gulf states after the BP oil disaster. While they also experienced an environmental catastrophe, intentional governmental action (such as acknowledging the need for change, promoting a vision, and providing resources and opportunities for structural change) to promote systemic change did not occur.

At this time, we can no longer wait for such events to spark this change in consciousness and political will. Changes can sometimes occur in particular settings without the need for catalytic events. Yet for transition to occur at a national level, which is now a practical necessity, the will -- both popular and governmental -- must be engendered in some other way.  This is a critical area demanding further research. Once approaches are developed to address this challenge, the strategies of collaboration, ambitious goals and policy will be significantly more powerful.
