The WHOPPER Peer Critique Protocol and groups
  • I'm launching the WHOPPER peer critique process today. You'll need to schedule your critiques sometime between now and  the end of class on Thursday.
  • As a reminder, I am not giving feedback on your entire rough draft. You can conference with me for specific questions on specific sections of your essay and you’ll be able to refine FINAL thesis after you get your grade back. THUS, peer critiques are super important as are meetings with you SPAs.

2/19/2019

Announcements
  • SPAM 2 is due Thursday at 3:30 pm.
  • How to format your paper in MLA style (bookmark this)

Starter
  • Go to WRITING WORKSHOPS AND RESOURCES section of the Phase 3 portion of the Senior Project page.
  • Check out the titles of the various documents provided here to support you in writing beautifully and skillfully.
  • Decide which documents you think you'll need to refer to the most based on your writing needs.
  • Select ONE of those.
  • Take a few minutes to read over that resource.
  • Tell your neighbor one thing you learned from that document and give it a YELP review.

Writing Workshop #1: In Text Citations  (linked on Senior Project page)
Again, all students must use in-text citations whenever they quote or paraphrase.  At this point we're not going to practice.  I will do a quick review, and then I am going to refuse to answer any questions that are covered on the handout or easily searchable on Purdue OWL.

Writing Workshop #2: Setting up Quotations (linked Senior Project page)
All students are expected to set up and follow up their quotations throughout their senior thesis.  Given the prevalence of errors here, we are ALL going to practice this together before we go into Part 3, which is the part of your paper with significant citations and quotes.

Outline Conferences
  • I have graded most outlines and provided feedback.  If you have questions on my feedback, feel free to conference with me. I will conference today with those students for whom I haven't  had a chance to provide feedback, which include the following:
  1. Morning Pod: Ari, Sammy (SPAM 2), Lance (SPAM 2), Lydia (SPAM 2)
  2. Afternoon Pod: Henry, Tanner, Ryan, Amanda (SPAM 2), Josie, Sadie- workshop #2

Today's Writing Goals
  • Begin writing Part 3  (aim to be DONE with Part 3 by Friday, that way you can just write Part 4, over the weekend and do some last minute refinements in class Monday to be ready with a solid rough draft for the rough draft deadline and peer critique on 2/26)

HOMEWORK:
Write one paragraph of your senior thesis!

Thesis Statement Workshop and Outline Writing

2/6/2019

Thesis Statement Workshop
Time to get ourselves a working thesis statement!  Please note, I do expect whatever you come up with today to morph and change as you write and think more deeply about how to synthesize your research. This is to get us started, and give you some direction in your outlining process.

Outlining
Once you have a thesis statement that has gone through the critique process (see Senior Project page for this!), you should start outlining.  My suggestion is that you start thinking about Part 3, and thinking about how you want to organize this section.  Think about major themes in your research, different arguments that are made about your topic, and start making groups.  Then move on to outlining Parts 1 and 2.
  • GOAL:  Identify major themes/arguments for Part 3 of your paper.

HOMEWORK:
Work on your outline!  The sooner you finish (and get it approved by Lori), the more time you have to write!
