Advisory Announcement
  • Tomorrow's the last library work day
  • Purpose and plan for advisory tomorrow
  • #studentvoiceandchoice

STARTER- Turn and Talk
  1. Turn to a partner and tell them what you think the purpose of Part 3 of your paper is.
  2. Discuss concerns about this section
  3. Discuss strategies you could use to help you tackle it

Strategies for Part 3
  1. Skim a couple examples from senior project page to get a sense of different approaches/organization, etc....
  2. NOTES and QUOTES: Write it all out without the need for it to be perfect right now or for it to even flow well. Just get your ideas out with the quotes/evidence you plan to use. THEN, print it out when you feel like you have said everything you want to say and included most of the evidence you will include. Read through the printed pages and find the themes, move ideas around, etc... Then go back to the electronic document and refine for organization, sentence fluency, flow, etc....
  3. OR Mind Map your ideas out!
  4. Most importantly, exhibit critical thinking and strong argumentation. Avoid generalizations, biased thinking or unsubstantiated claims. Sound reasoning, excellent logic and deep thinking is the name of the game folks!

WRITE PART 3!!!
  • Stuck? Read a couple student examples on the senior project page
  • Chat your ideas out with a friend
  • Talk to your SPA
  • Do more research

STARTER: Ashley’s will  read aloud  this New York Times article on PROCASTIONATION
After I finish reading, please write down a reflection to bring to outline conferences with me this week:

** If you already conferenced with me last week, please turn in your reflection now. Thanks!

Thesis Statement Workshop and Part 1 of Outline

2/11/2020

CCwC Deadline!
Remember those? Yep. They're a thing.  Deadline for these is not indefinitely. Please have completed a CCwC interview/site visit and email me your reflection before Osprey Week!

Thesis Statement Workshop
Time to get ourselves a working thesis statement!  Please note, I do expect whatever you come up with today to morph and change as you write and think more deeply about how to synthesize your research. This is to get us started, and give you some direction in your outlining process.

Outlining
Once you have a thesis statement that has gone through the critique process (see Senior Project page for this!), you should start outlining.  My suggestion is that you start thinking about Part 3, and thinking about how you want to organize this section.  Think about major themes in your research, different arguments that are made about your topic, and start making groups.  Then move on to outlining Parts 1 and 2.
  • GOAL:  Identify major themes/arguments for Part 3 of your paper.

HOMEWORK:
Work on your outline!  The sooner you finish (and get it approved by Ashley), the more time you have to write!

Let's start outlinin' shall we?

2/10/2020

CLASS BIZ
  • DUE TODAY: Final Annotated Bibliography- email them by start of class
  • Due TOMORROW: Thesis statement draft for critiques
  • Have you scheduled your SPAM 2 for sometime between 2/20 and 2/27?
  • Morning POD-- Listen to this Throughline podcast about Hong Kong protests for Jackson's seminar on Friday!

STARTER
Let's look at 2 example thesis statements.  Pick one of these and read the title page and all of the introduction. Try to identify what line(s) are the thesis statement.

  1. Sarah VonTersch- What is the most effective way to reduce drug cartel power and minimize their negative effects?
  2. Caeley McClain- What are the most effective methods to get uninvolved people to take initial action on climate change in the United States?

Outline of Senior Thesis- Dissection Activity
Senior Thesis Outline Dissection- Complete this activity to get a look at the inner workings of some good outlines (not perfect...but good)

Review the guidelines on the "Elements" handout (found on the Senior Project page)

Review outline format and requirements as a class with Ashley
  1. This outline is what is due on THURSDAY, 2/20
  2. DO YOU HAVE a different style of outlining? Share it out and feel free to pitch Ashley on using a different template as long as your outline has similar information as the template I've provided requires!

Thesis Statement Drafting (draft due tomorrow for critique!)
  1.  Generating a Thesis: (two potential approaches)

Work Time Goals:
  1. Send SPAM 2 Email to your SPA
  2. Draft a working thesis statement that we can critique tomorrow
  3. Start PART 3 of your outline (I recommend starting with Part 3, rather than the introduction)

HOMEWORK:
  1. Draft a working thesis statement (it can be crappy!).  This should be a 1-2 sentence answer to your research question.

Student-Led Seminar and Annotated Bib. Day

2/7/2020

First Half of Class: Finish Annotated Bib or prepare for the student-led seminar

Second Half of Class: (11;15 or 1:45) Sage/Sean lead seminar!

QUIZ DAY!

2/6/2020

STARTER: 10 minutes to review for the quiz.

QUIZ

CLASS BIZ
  • Deep reading re-dos due tomorrow
  • Final annotated bibliography with 8-10 sources minimum due Monday, start of class
  • Student-led seminars tomorrow!
  • You can move beyond strict academic sources for your research now BUT you should pick the most credible sources possible. Rather that TED Talks, try to find a paper BY the speaker. Stick to research/policy institutes or organizations rather than pop-culture magazines/articles BUT for some of your topics, things like New York Times, PBS, NPR, TIME, Nat Geo, etc... are OK. Just depends on the topic/field of study.  Not sure? Ask me!

CONFERENCES
  • Annotated bib check-ins

SPAM 2 email, Library work day and Annotated Bibliographies are due!

2/5/2020

Turn in your Annotated Bibliography! (Email to me!)

SPAM 2 Emails
  1. Step 1:  Read the EXAMPLE letter here.  Seriously, this has become legend.  Can you you usurp this hero, and take your place in the annals of history?
  2. Step 2:  Read the SPAM 2 Guidelines here.  This is important, as it gives you the date range and focus of the meeting.
  3. Step 3:  Write and send the email to your SPA.  Follow up as needed to get your next meeting scheduled.

Work Time:
  1. Make your note card for tomorrow's quiz (use the links on MONDAY's DP POST to help you study!!)
  2. Annotated Bibliography
Goal: Complete 6th entry for your annotated bibliography. Find the 8th by Monday (FINAL annotated bib with a total of 8-10 entries due Tuesday, beginning of class)
