Required Elements of your Thesis Paper + Outline Assignment and Examples

1/27/2017

STARTER
Let's reorient ourselves to the senior project page resources so that you know exactly where you can find any and all documents needed to help you write your outline, thesis statement and ultimately, your thesis paper!

1. Head on over to the senior project page of my DP
2. Find the section titled "Phase 3: Writing"
3. Now find the following three documents:
  • "Elements of your thesis"
  • "Outline assignment and example"
  • "Thesis Statement Workshop"
4. Also, be sure you note where other student outline examples are on the page.
5. Once you've located these sources, open the "ELEMENTS of your thesis" document. If you'd like a hard copy of this, let me know!  Read through each section of this guide. Be prepared to discuss the following questions:
  • What are you noticing about what all you should include in your thesis paper and how you should organize it?
  • What gaps are you realizing exist in  your own research that might prevent you from completing all of the required elements of the thesis?
  • What questions do you have about how to organize your thesis?

CLASS BIZ
  1. Turn in Deep Reading re-do's if you got below a 3 on any section of the rubric!
  2. Week 5 Objectives/Benchmarks
  3. Conference with me today about your deep reading checkpoint assignment if you haven't already.
  4. Annotated bibliographies are due on Monday via email. Beginning of class.

AGENDA
1. Discuss the above questions regarding the required elements of your thesis
  • Note the two different TYPES of papers: One for original research, one for non-original resesarch
2. Key elements of  thesis statement
A strong thesis statement should do most or all of the following:
  1. Directly address your research question
  2. Take a stand on an issue
  3. Justify discussion
  4. Set up contrast
  5. Include at least 1 main idea

3. Look at the outline assignment and examples to be found on my senior project page

4. Work time and Homework:
  • Finish your annotated bibliography
  • Draft a thesis statement. It can be super rough today, but bring one for Monday's thesis statement workshop
  • Begin your outline if you're ready to start that!
