Thursday, 10/6: SAC work and Bill to Law Quiz review

10/6/2016

Class Biz
1. Reminder on what I'm grading for the Congress SAC/Seminar
What is Ashley grading?
  • Completion grade for reading questions and summary of your additional document(s)
  • Completion grade for your evidence outline in partners
  • Seminar pre-write: Assessed more like a seminar reflection
2.  Next Steps in Senior Project Research (see Senior Project tab on my DP for all Senior Project resources)
3. Homework: Finish your evidence outline and any additional reading and prep for the SAC by tomorrow!
4. Model Senate roles are assigned! See the documents page on my dp or the back wall of my classroom for your assignment!

AGENDA
First, we'll do some review for tomorrow's Bill to Law quiz

Step 1: Get in the same groups you were in for yesterday's Senior Project brainstorm critique
Now, get a stack of the bill to law process "cards" for the Great Card Sort!
  • Lay out all the cards
  • Put them in the correct order to be in line with the process of how a bill becomes a law.
  • Once each group has sorted the cards, the sub or a student can unveil the whiteboard flow chart Ashley had drawn with her beautiful art skills and check to make sure your group was right!

Step 2: Quiz each other the other elements you need to know for the quiz
The Process
You should be able to give a general overview of the Bill to Law Process.  HINT:  If it’s on the cards, or if it’s on the lecture notes handout, you should probably know it!

Important People/Parties
  1. Who can write bills?  Where do they start?
  2. What party controls the House?
  3. What party controls the Senate?
  4. Who is the Speaker of the House?  What party?
  5. Who is the Senate Majority Leader?  What party?
  6. Who is the Senate Minority Leader?  What party?
Committees
  1. What is the purpose of Senate Committees?  What do they do?
  2. What does the Conference Committee do?
Voting/Passing a Bill
  1. What percentage does it take to pass a bill?
  2. What percentage does take to override a presidential veto?
  3. What is a Pocket Veto?
  1. What is a filibuster?  How many votes does it take to override it?
  2. What are different ways to “kill” a bill?  You should be able to talk about at least 3 beyond just not passing it in a vote on the House or Senate floor.

Is Congress Broken SAC
Step 4:  Answer Reading Questions (Independently) and continue reading (30-ish minutes)
1. Answer all the reading questions for your core assigned document, either digitally or handwritten.
2. Summarize the main arguments of your additional document(s) in your own words (this can just be a bullet pointed list)

Steps 5 and 6: Gather evidence and organize your evidence (IN PARTNERS)
Please find a partner with your same position. JUST ONE partner.  With your partner, gather all of the evidence from your document that supports your perspective.  Do some more reading as necessary
  • Challenge: Develop counter-arguments for the opposing side.  If you have extra time, you may explore the counter-argument article.
  • Create an “evidence” document with your partner that organizes and clearly displays the main ideas and evidence from the article. Here is a format you could use but you could use another format if you prefer.  There are also hard copies available on my desk!
  • If time allows, keep researching and gathering evidence!
